Last Years Music Video

We have picked an example from last years music videos that we feel contains concepts we would like to include in our video. The song is 'Your kisses are wasted on me':


Goodwin’s music video analysis:

There are 6 areas to cover when analysing a music video. We will use these to analyse our student example.

1.Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics(e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
In this video, typical characteristics are shown. There are performances with dance routines from 3 girls, in different locations. This is typical to a 'girly' song but it works well and is effective overall.

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
The lyrics are about three girls all chasing the same guy, and the girls all sing 'your kisses are wasted on me.' This implies that all three girls have been messed around and have seen sense and are expressing their feelings.

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
The music and visuals also match as they are scenes cut in time with the music. The dancing and split scenes are also timed with the music.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
The close ups on the females characters help to develop a closer relationship between the viewer and the actors. This enables a connection to be made.

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
This is to help the audience gain the impression of jealousy in the video. The three girls who have all had some experience with the same guy helps to show the 'spying' on each other because of the jealousy they feel between one another.

6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).
There are lots of interextual references to other music videos in the video as they follow many of the conventions that other music videos show and follow. This helps the audience to link this to other music videos, especially of the same of similar genre.
