Rough Cut Feedback...

The class watched out rough cut of our video and we received mixed reactions, which is what we wanted:

Positive Feedback:

-Good background
-Effective use of black and white
-Visuals work well with the lyrics (representative)
-Good acting
-Lots of energy and enthusiasm
-Shots and angles work well
-Well planned out
-Good use of location

Negative Feedback(Improvements):
-Lipsync a bit out on some parts
-Dancing on bed can be repetitive. We are going to edit this, as it was only a roughcut and we haven't yet filmed all of the shots required
-Maybe a few more shots could be used in blank spaces

Rough Cut

We still need to do some more filming so we have some more shots to put into our video. Once we have done this we can start to finalise the editing stage.

Our Animatic and evaluation

Hi guys...this is our animatic its AWESOME!! Take a look. we didn't use all the shots that we intend on using because we simply ran out of time. Therefore thats why there are many blank spaces and repeated shots. We needed to match all the shots to the song, as it didn't make sense, when we ran through it, so we took some time matching the words with the correct actions of the the animatic. Thats all =D Peace out!

Last Years Music Video

We have picked an example from last years music videos that we feel contains concepts we would like to include in our video. The song is 'Your kisses are wasted on me':

Goodwin’s music video analysis:

There are 6 areas to cover when analysing a music video. We will use these to analyse our student example.

1.Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics(e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
In this video, typical characteristics are shown. There are performances with dance routines from 3 girls, in different locations. This is typical to a 'girly' song but it works well and is effective overall.

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
The lyrics are about three girls all chasing the same guy, and the girls all sing 'your kisses are wasted on me.' This implies that all three girls have been messed around and have seen sense and are expressing their feelings.

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
The music and visuals also match as they are scenes cut in time with the music. The dancing and split scenes are also timed with the music.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
The close ups on the females characters help to develop a closer relationship between the viewer and the actors. This enables a connection to be made.

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
This is to help the audience gain the impression of jealousy in the video. The three girls who have all had some experience with the same guy helps to show the 'spying' on each other because of the jealousy they feel between one another.

6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

There are lots of interextual references to other music videos in the video as they follow many of the conventions that other music videos show and follow. This helps the audience to link this to other music videos, especially of the same of similar genre.

Locations

We have decided to focus our music video mainly on the concept of 'going out' therefore many of the locations are 'getting ready' and scenes outside. We are also going to use a sequence of scenes trying to establish some abstract scenes and art, using lights, flashbacks and fast cuts. This will help to differenciate our music video from other peoples. It also helps to create a contrast between the two different types of footage we are encorporating.

..Our Pitch*

Genre: Punk/Rock/Pop
Track: Girl Love
Artist: Self Service
Target Audience-18-25

The look that we are trying to achieve will be very modern and colourful. We aim to make a video which reflects the tone of the song.

The narrative is based around a lesbian couple. The video will mainly be made up of flashbacks from the night before. Two girls drinking and getting ready to go out, making their way out, and also clips of both girls with their boyfriends. The irony is that the girls are both dating the same guy. The video will end in the present time(the morning after), and the two girls in bed together. One of the girls awakes and a 'fish eye' lens will be used to show that she is hungover. This will happen when the music clows down and becomes blurry. The fottage can be slowed down to create a realistic effect from the characters perspective. She will stumble around and then realise that the guy is in the bed too. In the video, lots of different locations will be used, for example, a bedroom, a Car and a cinema, which will differentiate the video. We are planning to use clothing that will appeal to a modern audience. In the video, there will be a mixture of reality performance and linked themed shots of art. These shots will appear throughout and add intensity. It will identify themes throughout the song, taking the lyrics quite literally. We decided to use these shots because the band said they are inspried by these, so we should therefore include some of the original inspiration. When editing we will cut these shots very fast to match the tempo of our song. While the flashbacks are used throughout the video, we we also have the two girls performing on a bed, parallel to this. By doing this we are incorperating several techniques and stlyes of filming.

A variety of camera angles will be used to make sure the shots are portrayed in the right way. Shots will be a variety of closeups of the protagonists, and the odd long shot. Shots of the two girls will be from varied ‘random’ angles. This will make the video very abstract and modern looking. We will use cross cutting and layering, we believe this will mix in well with the overall pop, punk, indie and mainly ‘experimental’ genre of music.

Initial Ideas

We have thought of a few ideas that we could use in our video:

The first one is based on based on parallel editing. This involves many different stories going on at once. The song is about two girls going out to impress the same guy; but then they realise they like each other too. Therefore getting drunk and having a good time. We would have the main story line going on, while it cuts to the two girls perfoming and also random couples kissing.

Our second idea is to simply have just a performance video. This would include a band playing, and because it is so simple it could turn out very effective.

Our third and final idea is to take the lyrics literally. We would listen to teh words and base our actions upon the lyrics.

Inspiration...

We have researched new rave images and also musci videos that have givin us potential ideas:

Prima J-Rockstar
We decided to involve this video because when the two girls are performing it shows competition between the two, and we would like to use this idea, as for our intitial idea we want to have parallel editing of people kissing, me and Sophie performing and a diverse story line.

Tatu - All The Things She Said
We like this video because it has a similar narrative to our song. We could use some of the concepts and mix it in with other ideas.

This video features a lot of homosexuality that is contained within our lyrics, so although we wouldn't maybe use such in depth imagery we could apply some of it to our video.

Beyonce-Green Light

This video 'green light' by beyonce uses a lot of different colours that looks very effective. We could use this to go with our music at different stages.

Plain White T's-Hey There Delilah

This video uses a lot of split screen which we feel could work well in our video, with the parallel editing of several storylines at once.

History Of Punk Rock and Queercore...

“Punk Rock" was originally used to describe the garage musicians of the '60's. Bands like the Sonics were starting up and playing out with no musical or vocal instruction, and often limited skill. Because they didn't know the rules of music, they were able to break the rules. The mid to late '60s saw the appearance of the Stooges and the MC5 in Detroit. They were raw, crude and often political. Their concerts were often violent affairs, and they were opening the eyes of the music world. The final primary influence is found in the foundations of Glam Rock. Artists like David Bowie and the New York Dolls were dressing outrageously, living extravagantly and producing loud trashy rock and roll. Glam would end up splitting up its influence, doling out portions to hard rock, "hair metal" and punk rock.

Queercore.
In the 1990s, the queercore movement developed around a number of punk bands with gay members such as Fifth Column, Pansy Division, Team Dresch, and Sister George. Inspired by openly gay punk musicians of an earlier generation, queercore embraces a variety of punk and other alternative music styles. Queercore lyrics often treat the themes of prejudice, sexual identity, gender identity, and individual rights. The movement has continued to expand in the 2000s, supported by festivals such as Queeruption.
In 1991, a concert of female-led bands at the International Pop Underground Convention in Olympia, Washington, heralded the emerging riot grrrl phenomenon. Billed as "Love Rock Revolution Girl Style Now", the concert's lineup included Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Heavens to Betsy, L7, and Mecca Normal. Bikini Kill's lead singer Kathleen Hanna, the iconic figure of riot grrrl, moved on to the electro art punk band Le Tigre. Singer-guitarists Corin Tucker of Heavens to Betsy and Carrie Brownstein of Excuse 17, a band active in both the queercore and riot grrrl scenes, later cofounded the celebrated indie/punk band Sleater-Kinney.

Self Service...

Self Service is made up of four teenagers from Bristol. The girls built the foundations of the group before the boys were allowed anywhere near it. Selfservice call them selfs the new 'rock punk pop'. Selfservice have been working on their songwriting and production with Guy Chambers – the bloke who helped make Robbie Williams a solo star – but there is no sinister industry puppetry going on. As he puts it: "They're teenagers that I really respect standing up to me and saying 'I don't like this bit', or 'I can't sing that' or 'this bit's boring'. They're not intimidated. I find that great." There are four distinct characters in the band. Flo is the take-no-nonsense stickswoman, already sick of people questioning her place on the drum stool because of how she looks. Bassist Ben Hawthorne is the joker of the pack, loving his life, loving this band and infusing the music with a deceptively funky backbone. Guitar player Mark Cooper is affable, funny and with a passion for music that shines through. He's one hell of a guitar player too – throwing out fizzing riffs and pinpoint leads like he's got an hour to live and wants to see it out in style. Then there's singer Sophie. Give her a microphone and she's transformed into a tornado of gobby, naughty lyrics and sharp-as-diamonds melodies, all delivered in a voice that seems way too powerful for someone only just old enough to drink (legally). Lily Allen meets Shirley Manson, only better. There is something brilliantly gang-like about the way Selfservice go about their business. They were all friends in different bands in Bristol before coming together in their current form when Sophie and Flo decided their old bass player and guitarist weren't right for what they wanted to do and invited Mark and Ben to join. The poppier sound of the girls' original line-up soon became something else. Now, like a modern day Monkees, the band are co-habiting in a house in North London. Stage one of their masterplan is now complete – a six-track statement of intent recorded with Guy Chambers at his Sleeper Studio in North London. Tossing influences around like rag dolls (there are hints of everything from American pop-punk, through British indie and mainstream pop in the mix) and then heaving those same influences out of the pram to make way for their own brand of sassy glamour, Selfservice have delivered something rooted in good old fashioned riffs and tunes, but liberally sprinkled with the stardust of youthful sass and swagger.

Introduction...

The song that we are going to use for our music video is 'Girl Love' by Self Service. We were initially doing a different song but we had to change and therefore restart the project. The song is fairly upbeat and typically "emo". It is quite catchy and is about two girls and a boy. This is good because that is how our group is made up.It was hard for us to find the lyrics to this song so we emailed the band and they replied immediately with an ethusiastic reponse and the lyrics:

eight, o clock, kicks off running round in bra and pants
two vod-ka shots, getting in the mood to dance, walking to the nightclub
is that grandma for real
checking on my make-up
no-one knows just how i feel

whenever i want a reaction,
i know where to get my kicks
give it some girl on girl action
and taste your hot lips
i wana take all her clothes off
but is that even close to enough
saturday night is girl love
you know its all about the kiss (whao)
you know its all about the kiss (whao)

look, around, scanning
then i see a guy whose fit
can i, f*ck him,i have to find a way to
make him look in my direction,
cus he's ending my night
bet i could grab his attention
now we're running out of time
(chorus repeats)

did you see him passing by
he thinks i might be gay
wish he could be mine
tonight lets split it three,WAYS!
(solo)
(chorus repeats)

you know its all about the kiss (whao)
you know its all about the kiss (whao)
you know its all about the kiss
